An aristocrat (Nicole Kidman) inherits a huge ranch in Australia. In a bid to stop barons from taking over the ranch, she joins forces with a cattle driver (Hugh Jackman). Although she has reservations at first, she quickly joins him to drive 2000 cattle over the vast difficult landscape, only to get caught in the bombing of Darwin city by Japanese forces.
