Batman and Harley Quinn (2017) Reviews

Well, there isn't much to talk about this movie. In fact, it's just a silly but entertaining animation (for the most part), it's far from DC's best, but is far from the worst too. Although, I think that the movie will have a hard time to find his public, it has some sexual jokes in some parts, so I really don't know if is the best DC animation for kids, but, at the same time, it sounds like a fluffy dumb kid movie for the majority of his runtime, thus I don't think that is for adults too. Anyway, Batman and Harley is over all just a short and "ok" DC animation, will someday show up on the TV, you'll probably see, and may like, or might not. Other things: The animation isn't great, but is better than some recent DC films (like Son of Batman, or Batman vs Robin). The structure itself is pretty basic, predictable and etc, you basically knows how the film will end (almost). Overall, I get it (kind off), but I really don't like the way that they approach Batman here, he gets his ass kick to almost everyone (so does nightwing), and he does some silly jokes as well.

  • Quirky & Strange but oddly enjoyable

I didn't take this movie quite as serious as some who've reviewed it here on IMDb. Their views are perfectly valid and insightful and I for one appreciate their efforts; I guess I just assumed this movie was going to be offbeat (due to the title) and went in just hoping to be entertained not to have a life-changing experience. Guess what?! I really was (entertained that is)! In my opinion, it was just the right amount of nostalgia for Batman The Animated Series (BTAS) of the 90's with a bit of modern WTF & OMG thrown in for good measure. I was genuinely shocked a couple of times (you'll know when you get to THAT scene) and laughed out loud at others (keep your eyes out for the Batusi!!) Thought I must admit, I really missed Arleen Sorkin's voice as Harley. Not sure what happened there WB?! I mean, it seems like a no brainer to bring her back if you bring everyone else from BTAS back (just sayin'). One way you might be able to enjoy 'Batman & Harley Quinn' more is if you just look at it as a really long "lost episode" of BTAS, not an addition to the DC Animated Universe. That's what I found myself doing. I didn't love every single episode of BTAS (gasp!) but I did love the entire series overall. There are people who will trash this film, stating that it somehow destroyed their childhood, but honestly, if that's the case then they took it WAY too seriously. It was exactly what the title implied; a crazy hybrid story that intertwines Batman (and Nightwing) with a Harley Quinn story. My suggestion is this: if you are hankerin' for an animated film, want to be entertained and maybe kill 75 min., watch this quirky, sometimes shocking flick. Lighten up people, or as a great clown once said..."Why so serious?!"

  • A disgrace

This movie is an utter disgrace to the Batman animated series we loved in the 90s. I would never think a Batman animated movie would resort to fart jokes. The new voice actor for Harley is awkward. The animation is sometimes choppy as if this was animated in 2001. The ending is a joke, and it symbolizes the mediocrity of the movie

Granted, as most of you are saying here, the movie was not what was expected it to be. Nonetheless, i found it great. Most of the review up here are talking about how it's an insult to the original animated series but what you forget is that this is not an episode of that series. This is a stand alone feature film in the same style of the series. This means they used their original designs en animation style of the series and that's it. And being a feature film animator myself, they took that style to a whole new level with this movie. I loved the improved animation in the action sequences and it really worked well for me. Animation overall was better than what they did in the series. The Musical number was indeed a strange choice but i enjoyed it anyway. Especially when batman starts tapping his finger. Of course, this is completely off character but still it works and showed us that he does like music. What I think it boils down to is that most people expected to see batman, Nightwing, Harley... in their traditional way, the way they know these characters. What we got instead was a movie where the character were very human. A great example of this, and some people might find it distasteful, is the Harley/ Nightwing sequence. It made Nightwing much more human for me. He is a man, she is a sexy girl. How would you react? Another example is the ex boyfriend. This shows that Harley had a life and boyfriends and breakups. Sound familiar. Just think about it, this gave the character so much more depth then just being the villain we all know and love. Even the fart joke, I think a perfectly timed fart joke is timeless and is funny to anyone. And again that made characters more human with bodily functions. I personally think this is a very enjoyable mature superhero movie in a unconventional way and i will recommend it.

  • They've gotta be messing with us, right?

I paid twenty bucks to see this movie in the cinema. Twenty bucks to watch Harley Quinn farting in the Batmobile and Batman telling Nightwing it "smells like discipline." I'm serious. The movie was bad enough before that with Harley complaining about being treated like a sex object only to then have her way with Nightwing tied to her bed, but the fart scene was as much as I could take. Yes, I endured the rest of this in order to review it (check out my review channel by searching Dan Jensen Movie Talk into Google or YouTube if you want, I've posted a lengthier review there) but nothing could save it by then. Poor writing, too many convenient plot devices and a really lazy ending. Plus a post-credit sequence that went for 3.5 minutes and had zero relevance to the actual plot of the movie! I really hope this isn't the direction the DC animated universe is heading, because if that's the case I'm done with it.
