Dark Money (2018) Reviews
Terrific and Extremely Important Documentary
My wife and I watched this marvelous documentary at the Sundance Film Festival last night. It is extremely well done and it presents a compelling narrative about the role of "dark money" (political funds that cannot be traced to their source) in contemporary American politics. Flawed campaign financing laws lie at the heart of many of our difficult political problems. Kudos to Kimberly Reed and everyone involved in producing this gem.
Insight into what is happening in American government
It was fascinating to realize how corporations and oligrarchs have figured out how to take control of our government. And it was sad to underrstand that most of our representatives and senators owe allegiance to Dark Money, even though every one of them would deny it. I am devasted that there are so many people who are willing to align to corruption in order to get elected.
Corporate campaign finance under attack!
Nice documentary on US political campaign contributions and disclosure laws
What is a Democracy?
I have the right to acquire as much money as I want. I do not like taxes. Regulations, especially government, are a burden. Less is better. Medicare, especially ACA (Obamacare) is socialism forcing people to have coverage or me to help foot their bills. National Parks should be reduced & development allowed. Environmental regulations are too costly & restrictive. We are a Christian country. I did support state's rights, but no longer. Gun regulation - no! Not likely I'll be adversely affected anyway. What am I? A Democrat or Republican? (Hint: While in H.S. I shook hands w/Barry Goldwater founder of Republican conservatism.) I belong to Americans for Job Security; Center to Protect Patient's Rights; American Future Fund; Americans for Responsible Leadership; Americans for Prosperity; Americans for Tax Reform: Freedom Partners. I am a Koch brother and we funded well over $200 million to get what we want. We bought our own media sources; we elected politicians; sympathetic judges appointed; enacted legislation that benefits us, other corporations & fellow 1%. One of our biggest purchases was US Supreme Court judges who, through Citizens United (aka us) allowed our (and other) corporations unlimited funding of candidates w/no disclosure of who we are. After all a corporation has the same rights as a person. We even had state disclosure laws (e.g. 100 yr old Montana law) overturned thus allowing any outside (including foreign governments) to fund an election; no regulation whatsoever. We even went after moderate Republicans who didn't buy into our program.
